How to resize an image

  1. Add your image

Drop an image or click to pick one. Its original dimensions are shown as a reference.

  2. Enter the dimensions

Type a width or a height in pixels: with "keep aspect ratio" on, the other value is computed for you. Or pick a preset: Open Graph 1200×630, Instagram 1080×1080, Full HD 1920×1080, X header 1500×500, YouTube thumbnail 1280×720.

  3. Pick the format and download

JPEG, PNG or WebP output, with adjustable quality for JPEG and WebP (90 by default). The size of the resulting file is shown before you download it.

When to use it

An image with imposed dimensions

Profile picture, banner, video thumbnail: presets give the expected format directly, cropped around the center.

A shared link preview

A page's Open Graph image is prepared at 1200×630: that is the format most social networks and messaging apps pick up.

Lightening a photo for the web or an email

A phone photo is over 4,000 px wide; a screen rarely shows more than 1,600. Reducing dimensions is the most effective way to shrink a file.

Good to know before resizing

  • With "keep aspect ratio", the whole image fits inside the box you give, with no distortion: a 4032×2268 photo requested at 800×600 comes out at 800×450.
  • Without that option, and with presets, the image fills the box exactly and whatever overflows is cropped around the center. It is never stretched.
  • Enlarging an image creates no detail: the result is bigger, not sharper. Server mode in fact refuses to enlarge and returns the image at its original size.
  • PNG keeps transparency and loses nothing, but is heavy for a photo. JPEG and WebP are made for photos; only WebP also handles transparency.
  • "Browser" mode: the work happens on your device. "Server" mode: image uploaded without its metadata (removed before upload for JPEG, PNG and WebP), processed in memory without being stored, 10 MB at most. Either way the output file holds neither EXIF nor GPS position.

Frequently asked questions

How do I resize without distorting the image?

Leave "keep aspect ratio" ticked and type only one dimension: the other follows. If you need a precise format with different proportions, the tool crops around the center instead of stretching.

Which size for Instagram, YouTube or a link preview?

The tool's presets: 1080×1080 for a square Instagram post, 1280×720 for a YouTube thumbnail, 1200×630 for a link preview (Open Graph), 1500×500 for an X header.

Does resizing reduce file size?

Yes, a lot: halving the width divides the pixel count by four. On our test photos, going from original size to 1,600 px saves far more than any quality setting. To process a batch, use the compressor and its "Max dimensions" setting.

Can I process several images at once?

Not with this tool, which handles one image at a time to allow precise settings. To bring a whole batch down to 2,048, 1,600 or 1,200 px, use the compressor.
