How to create a favicon

  1. Start from an image or from text

Import a square logo (PNG, JPG, SVG or WebP), or build an icon from a letter or an emoji: font, colors and background shape are set on screen.

  2. Pick the platforms

Browsers, Apple, Android, Windows: keep only the ones you care about. The preview shows the result at each size.

  3. Download the pack and paste the code

The ZIP holds favicon.ico, the PNGs, site.webmanifest and browserconfig.xml. Put them at the root of the site and paste the provided tags into the <head>.

When to use it

Launching a website

A single import gives every size expected by browsers, iOS, Android and Windows, with the code to paste.

A project without a logo

A letter on a colored background is enough for a prototype, an internal tool or a blog. Six background shapes and five fonts are available.

Converting a PNG to ICO

The generated favicon.ico bundles the 16, 32 and 48 px sizes in a single file, as older browsers and Windows expect.

An installable web app

The 192 and 512 px icons and the site.webmanifest file are what Android asks for when adding a site to the home screen.

What the pack contains

  • favicon.ico: a single file holding the 16×16, 32×32 and 48×48 sizes.
  • Browser PNGs from 16 to 228 px, Apple Touch Icons from 57 to 180 px, Android icons from 36 to 512 px, Windows tiles from 70 to 310 px.
  • site.webmanifest (name, theme color, 192 and 512 icons) and browserconfig.xml for Windows tiles.
  • Start from a square image of at least 512 px: a smaller source gets enlarged and looks blurry on large icons.
  • At 16 px, fine details vanish: a simple, high-contrast symbol stays readable, a logo with text does not.
  • Everything is generated in your browser. No image is uploaded: this tool has no server mode.

Frequently asked questions

Which favicon sizes do I really need?

The useful minimum: favicon.ico (16, 32, 48), a 32×32 PNG, the 180×180 Apple Touch Icon and the manifest's 192 and 512 icons. Other sizes cover older devices; you can untick the platforms you do not need.

Where do the files go?

At the root of the site, next to the home page, since browsers look for /favicon.ico by default. Then paste the provided tags into the <head> of your pages.

My new favicon does not show up. Why?

Browsers cache favicons for a very long time. Open /favicon.ico directly and reload it, or test in a private window.

My logo has a background: how do I get a clean favicon?

Remove the background first with the background removal tool, export a transparent PNG, then import that file here.
